"As the last apples are gathered and another harvest comes to an end, the story doesn't." That line is from Merridale Cidery & Distillery's fall events page. It introduces the orchard's Halloween events, and it also describes the rest of a Shawnigan Lake autumn pretty well.
The season runs on two calendars. The first belongs to the orchards and farm studios between the lake and Cobble Hill, and it is busiest from Thanksgiving weekend to the end of October. The second belongs to the rivers. BC Parks puts the best salmon viewing at Goldstream in late October through November, so the river calendar starts just as the orchard one winds down. The two meet on Sunday, October 25. That afternoon the community centre hosts its Fall Festival & Market, and that evening Merridale holds its 19+ Halloween night in the orchard. After that, the outings worth planning are mostly outdoors by the water, until the Artisan Christmas Craft Fair brings people back inside on November 28.

The orchard half, from Thanksgiving to Halloween
Thanksgiving weekend is the busiest stretch on the orchard calendar. From October 9 to 11, Merridale serves a farm-to-table turkey dinner in the orchard and runs a 19+ Adult Scavenger Hunt. The story behind the hunt is that "Meri & Dale" celebrated the harvest a little too hard, and players follow clues to piece together their night.
That same Saturday, October 10, Miller + Co Wood Studio and Pottery holds its annual Fall Makers Market on its farm at 4540 Koksilah Road. The market runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with local makers, more than 25 pumpkin varieties, food, yard games and a fire pit. If you're putting together a long weekend for family visiting from out of town, you can do the market and Merridale's Thanksgiving events on the same day.
The pressings are the dates to watch. Merridale runs Apple Pressing in Action on two Thursdays, October 8 and October 22. At each one, freshly harvested apples are pressed into juice as the cidery starts its next vintage. October 22 is the last pressing date on the schedule, and it falls three days before the October 25 crossover. Once the presses stop, the orchard calendar is mostly Halloween events.
Families with younger children have a free option all month. The Kid's Harvest Scavenger Hunt runs from September 28 to October 31. Pick up a sheet at the Farmhouse, solve the clues around the orchard, and earn a prize at the end. Music Bingo runs every Friday through October, and the Halloween edition on October 30 encourages costumes. Hot apple cider is on until December 31, so the orchard still has something to offer after the harvest events end.
October 25, when both calendars meet
The Shawnigan Lake Community Association's Fall Festival & Market runs Sunday, October 25, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Shawnigan Community Centre, 2804 Shawnigan Lake Road. Admission is free. The CVRD listing includes a bouldering wall, games, crafts, concession food, a Vendor Village of local sellers, and storytelling by the Cowichan South Arts Guild. Vendor space is free but limited. If you make something to sell, contact [email protected].
That evening, Merridale hosts Pint & Paint, a 19+ Halloween night in the orchard with growler painting, spooky music, cider and cocktails. Costumes are encouraged. You can spend the afternoon at the festival in the village and the evening at the orchard without leaving the area. On the event calendar, that Sunday is the last full day of the harvest season.
Then the rivers take over
The salmon run has its own timing. Local watershed reporting from The Discourse describes a typical Cowichan Valley pattern. Chinook arrive first, followed by chum and coho, with runs usually starting in October and peaking toward the end of November. That is a typical pattern, not a forecast for this year. Still, it means the river season peaks right when the orchard calendar has gone quiet.
These are the places BC Parks recommends for viewing:
| Spot | What BC Parks says | Plan around |
|---|---|---|
| Marie Canyon, Cowichan River Park | Spawning salmon are often easily seen in fall; the river runs through a sheer rock canyon | Fishing in this section is often closed from October to mid-December |
| Skutz Falls, Cowichan River Park | A prime fall viewing point, with river rapids and a man-made fish ladder | The park's species list includes coho, Chinook and chum |
| Goldstream Provincial Park | Annual chum run, best from late October through November | Highway 1 congestion during the run; pets leashed and out of the water |
At Goldstream, check before you go. BC Parks posted an advisory on September 27, 2026 that the Goldstream Nature House was closed because of a power failure. The day-use entrance is at Highway 1 and Finlayson Arm Road.
The salmon story starts closer to home, too. In a 2025 report, The Discourse said Shawnigan Creek is not a natural coho spawning creek, and that volunteers move salmon past its waterfalls to reach suitable spawning areas. The report named a trail at Shawnigan-Mill Bay Road and Barry Road as an access point. This year, the Shawnigan Basin Society's volunteer project is watching for coho spawning and development in Upper Shawnigan Creek, McGee Creek, West Arm Creek and their tributaries. DFO's salmon fishing rules list Shawnigan Creek as closed to salmon fishing year-round and show no salmon fishing on the Goldstream River.
This year's run comes after a hard summer on the water. On August 19, CHEK reported that Lulumexun, the Cowichan Tribes natural resources department, had issued a warning about the Koksilah River:
"During drought, the deeper pools that make popular swimming spots also become critical refuge for fish."
That warning described river conditions in August, not October. It still applies to any river visit this fall. Lulumexun asks that anyone who sees fish in distress, including fish stranded in drying stretches of river, report it to DFO's 24/7 Observe, Record and Report line at 1-800-465-4336. Local watershed advocates recommend watching quietly, giving the fish room, and keeping dogs leashed and out of the water.
For a river walk closer to home, the Kinsol Trestle carries the Cowichan Valley Trail 44 metres above the Koksilah River. It's about a 1.2-kilometre walk from the south-side parking lot. The CVRD scheduled its annual trail mowing for September and October and says the trail stays open during the work.
Back indoors on November 28
The Shawnigan Lake Artisan Christmas Craft Fair is on Saturday, November 28, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the community centre. It has more than 70 tables of handmade work. The fair is open to independent artisans only, with no agents or company representatives, and admission is free. Soup, sandwiches and festive treats come from Mrs. Claus's concession. Coming at the end of November, the fair is the first big indoor gathering after a month of river outings.
Eight days later, on Sunday, December 6, the Community Association hosts Christmas in the Park. The program includes cookie decorating, holiday crafts, letters to Santa, games, hot dogs, music and a Carol-oke sing-along.
If you have a question about the community centre itself, the front desk is open through December 19. Hours are Monday to Thursday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The CVRD's Fall 2026 Recreation Guide lists programs through December.
